After the end of an abusive relationship I had to quit study for mental health reasons and look for work to make up for lost income and the increase in expenses from no longer sharing.
Processing the change from youth allowance to Newstart was a mess and I've ended up on the hook for 6 weeks of pay.
It's been a huge burden on my ability to get life back on track in the past year as up until very recently when I started to find work, rent was consuming 80% of my income.
I've often had to borrow from friends or family to get by.
I tried my best to flag to Centrelink months in advance about what my situation had been and the disruptions that were coming, so that I could get the best advice. Yet even now there is very little understanding from workers and I still end up having to go through the whole tragedy regularly.
Also I didn't manage to get any of the help they're supposed to offer for DV as it only covers physical assault, when there is a change laid, within a week of the incident(s). So I think they did a pretty bad job, all in all.
Considering I was looking for work as soon as I left the course, they should have at least been able to consider me eligible for whatever the Newstart rate was at the time.
I may try to appeal before the debt gets paid in full for something like that.
