Tell us about your debt and how has this affected you? e.g. anxiety levels, financial and accommodation stress:

I got a call last week telling me that I had 12 days to report all my payslips to them otherwise they will use the ATO and that it would most likely result in a debt.

I called them yesterday and gave them all my payslip information to be copped with I owe them $5K.
I worked in dominos part time for Christ sake and was a full time student at university getting anywhere between 160-380$ a fortnight from depending on how much money I got in that fortnight and reported (my shifts constantly changed).

I told him there was no way I owed $5K because that’s in essence 80% if the money Centrelink gave me for that year anyway.
He asked me if my circumstances had changed in that period and I said for one month I changed from a full time student to part time student as I was in the process of changing my degree and then after one month exactly I changed it right back and even sent them a letter from my university telling them that I am now a full time student.

He went to “check on this” and after 20 mins of being on hold he told me that my file is now CORRUPTED and that he couldn’t access anything and that this “probably means that the debt I owe is significantly less" than what he initially said, but he is "still confident I owe Centrelink money”.

He told me he would call me at 3pm yesterday and I am still waiting for his call. This call was an hour before work and I had a panic attack and had to call my partner to calm me down and convince me to go to work because if I have to pay them $5K there’s nothing much more I can do but work.

I am also a postgraduate student and this stress has made me vomit constantly.
Needless to say I haven’t been coping very well.

How do you feel about the way the Government has handled this process?:

Utterly disgusted.
Asking for my payslips from 2 years ago when they recommend keeping payslips for 6 months.

I am not even getting Centrelink payments anymore and haven’t been for over a year.
I don’t understand how they are getting away with this. It is absolutely criminal
