Tell us about your debt and how has this affected you? e.g. anxiety levels, financial and accommodation stress:

What a complete & utter waste of mine and centrelink workers time. I answered YES to the initial question asking to confirm if the amount stated by the ATO was correct, and incurred an alleged debt.
To cut a long story short (because I don't have the time & still need to write this all out from my notes for the Senate Inquiry) I was initially skeptical I owed money because as a long-time, insecurely employed worker, I've had to meticulously keep records from multiple employers. I thought maybe I'd made a mistake. But after digging out all my old paperwork, requesting & receiving a print-out of amounts reported & paid, and setting up an excel spread-sheet, I realised the amount I'd reported was less than $10 different from the amount I'd earned.

Despite multiple phone calls to the compliance line over December / January, I wasn't able to get a clear answer on actually why I'd incurred a debt. Staff were mostly helpful (as in they weren't sure either!).
It then became a game of trial and error due to reading all the social media accounts.
Was it a mismatch in employers names?
Was it averaging my irregular pay over the financial year?
Were the dates wrong?

Finally, after hours uploading docs to the portal, more phone calls (taken during my work hours), I hit pay dirt with the manual compliance team.
My 'debt' was reduced to mere hundreds of dollars & I nearly gave in and paid, however persisted and finally worked the amount back to ZERO.

How do you feel about the way the Government has handled this process?:

I understand liberal ideology is to put the onus and cost back on the user of services. Less government and all that!
But surely this isn't working out the way they planned for it to all go down.
Resolving this issue took months of my time but also days of centrelink staffs time as well (wish I'd added it all up).
I'd encourage everyone to persist in disputing, if you have the energy, but think it's ironic this whole exercise is supposedly to tighten 'the integrity of the system'. All I can see is this costing more than expected (won't 'save' them as much as they thought) and a massive loss of trust in government.

This is no win/win situation - everyone is losing.
