Tell us about your debt and how has this affected you? e.g. anxiety levels, financial and accommodation stress:

Centrelink issued a debt for a $4,458, which included a "Recovery Fee" of $261, for alleged under reported income for a period of study in 2010-2011.

The initial letter was not sent to my current mailing address, which is current with electoral roles, licences etc. The letter came to my attention approximately one week prior to the requested date to contact by. It asked to confirm employment income for the period mentioned above. I rang my Tax accountant, and confirmed the amount listed on the letter was the correct amount. At the same time as receiving this letter, my father was in palliative care in hospital, with nurses saying he was on his death bed with only days to live. On the day of "the request to contact" due date, I found some time and energy between maintaining a full-time job and visiting my fathers hospital bed to give Centrelink a call. I looked over the letter, but found no contact phone numbers to call and explain to Centrelink my situation to, only the "feedback and complaints" phone line and instructions to login to my online account (I do not have an online Centrelink account, as I have not received any social welfare benifits since 2012!!).

My father passed away that night with me by his side, and I'm 100% glad I was not on hold speaking to Centrelink when this occurred!!. Two days after my father passing away, I received another letter stating I owed Centrelink $4458. A few days after my fathers funeral, I rang Centrelink to sort out the mess, as I honestly believed this debt had wholeheartedly been raised in error.

I have spent 12-15hours directly speaking to numerous Centrelink staff on the phone (but not waiting on hold). My case has had two reassessments. After the second reassessment my alleged debt went from $4458 to $1,243 (including a $46.36 "recovery fee"). There was no explanation how this was calculated.

I requested historical documents from Centrelink, and discovered gross misrepresentations of input data on Centrelinks part when they finally arrived 1 month later. I brought this to the attention of Centrelink again, and a "multi-calculation" manual reassessment was performed. After 2 days of "manual reassessment", I was informed my alleged debt was in fact now only $210.

I'd like an apology from Centrelink and an admission from Minister Tudge that YOUR POLICY FUCKED UP, YOU'VE HARASSED AND STRESSED YOUR CONSTITUENTS, and now your being proved wrong in your assumptions!

How do you feel about the way the Government has handled this process?:

The Government needs to realise, they will be severely punished for unfairly disturbing the peace amongst it's citizens. Halt the system now, and we will show some mercy!
