I was totally stunned when i received it.
I had been on a Widows Pension since 2006, but I'm being paid a Newstart Allowance. I only worked part time. I have been retired since 2013. They said they had overpaid me by $4000 for 2011 to 2012!!
My boss had sold the business and he had destroyed all payslips that were over 5 years old( I wonder if they know that , that no one keeps documents after 5 years!!!). I sent away for statements that had my net wage of course and sent everything to them. They still said i owed them so i asked for a review!!! If they did it or not i don't know but they still insisted I owe them!!!! Interestingly that year 2011 to 2012 , the guy who did my tax made a huge mistake on my income and the ATO picked up his mistake and I've still got the papers to prove it!!! But although I sent them a copy they insisted I owe them.
I paid up front $1060 in Jan 2019 and they are taking $75 per fortnight( after 3 months they started taking $159 without even telling me!!! When I went to centrelink to ask why, they said that they do it automatically and I have to come in and change it to $75 again!!!!!) .
One thing I didn't know and that I learnt from The Feed yesterday, was about your website and that you can request an ADEX. I also learnt that I wasn't alone with this issue !!!!!
This has and is still causing me a lot of stress !!! I moved and got a unit but since my retirement I finished the money in my super and closed it off and I'm eating into the little bit left for my old age!!!
This burden of being told out of the blue that you owe over $4000 has really hit me hard. I KNOW I HAVE ALWAYS DECLARED THINGS HONESTLY. I SINCERELY HOPE THAT THIS DEBT WILL BE REVERSED AS I KNOW I DON'T OWE THEM ANYTHING!!!!
JUST A SIDE POINT
Since 2006 Someone I saw in centrelink, put a letter next to my Super and it showed that I had an investment and not Super!!!! I found this out when I saw a Financial Planner 2013 when I was going to move. So I queried it with Centrelink and eventually to go the the Ombudsmen!!! The verdict was that for almost 7 years, for their mistake, I only got $500 back!!!!! I had no other recourse but to accept it!!!
Thanks for listening.
In my case and I'm sure in many more other cases, it has been unjust.
