NotMyDebt Stories

We are collecting stories on the site because we think it's important to have a way to people to add their voice to this issue by sharing their story. It's puts a human voice to the issues with using technology and automating systems and providing a blanket solution without providing staff and people that can right wrongs and help people when there is an error.

Please share your story with us if you have a Centrelink debt story that you believe has been issued in error or due to a fault in the system.

As frustrating as it is, persist with the appeals process, and know others are behind you.

I think it is absolutely ridiculous and greedy that this has happened. Given the fact Centrelink are taking $100 a fortnight out of my Centrelink pay, I really couldn't care less (it's their money anyway, and I earn enough to not have it crippling me).

I was confused but as it was a long time ago, I pulled out bank statements & tax returns to try & work out WTF was going on. Simultaneously (fortunately) the egregious nature of these debts hit the press/social media. I was not stressed about the debt, being forced to resign my job in the same week kinda overshadowed it..

Immense stress. This has now been appealed through AAT and I had a small reduction. What is alarming is the differing amounts of total wages that centrelink has for this period. They are all different and do not equate to my notice of tax assessment. In addition I received a debt for 11045.00 in late november that had a due date of 06/12/2016.

I have a false debt of thousands from 5 years ago. I am being treated like a criminal. I am being bullied. I am being told I'm a liar. The stress and anxiety this is causing is shocking. The powerlessness I feel is unrelenting. I can't sleep and I can't stop thinking about the injustice of this.
