I am one of the many who has received a Centrelink debt from 7 years ago!
I had parts of it reviewed and it's gone down from $1400 to $1100 and now I'm on a payment plan - it's really stressed me out and given me anxiety.
7 years ago, I lost my job around Christmas and was living on my own and had no choice to go to CL while I tried to find casual work.
They have now come back and told me that some payments were only declared as nett and others were that they paid me, and then I started a job and got a monthly pay 3 weeks later, so technically, I was earning money when they paid me.
As well as one job where I worked casually but they counted the whole period of my employment as working every day.
I really want to fight this, but I don't really know what to do.
I am such a self-sufficient person and would never scam the system.
I work for myself now and having to relive that 7 years ago has really affected my mental health.
I feel the staff I have talked to have been ok. They were just doing their jobs and some were compassionate, however I think the system is flawed.
I would understand a year later but several is just not right.
Plus most of the time, there are many of us who don't want to even touch Centrelink but have no choice due to unforseen or unfortunate circumstances.
